ARCHEOLOGY
|
| |
|
Remains dating back
to the earliest
years of the city's
history can be seen
in the
archaeological area
situated beneath the
cathedral square.
The site was
restored by the
Archaeological
Superintendency of
the Veneto region
who officially
opened the area to
the public in 1995.
The archaeological
area contains part
of a suburb of the
Roman "Municipium"
of FELTRIA, a town
which had
independent local
administration
governed by
magistrates who had
jurisdiction over
the town and
surrounding
territory. |
| |
 |
| |
|
Of the Roman town
which developed on
the site of an
earlier settlement
are visible the
remains of private
buildings, some are
shops that flank the
north side of a road
made of massive
stone slabs. Where
the road widens one
side street leads
uphill whilst in the
opposite direction
another heads south
beneath the walls of
a later medieval
building. |
| |
 |
| |
|
At the centre of the
area is a large
building with marble
and mosaic floors
which was probably
the headquarters (schola)
of a professional
association of some
sort. Centuries
after the collapse
of the Roman town
the area was again
utilized for the
construction of a
major building of
which remains only a
small part,
orientated obliquely
to the earlier
layout. |
| |
|
This building may be
part of the oldest
episcopal complex of
the early medieval
cathedral. Somewhat
later (end of XI -
XII century) is the
baptistry which has
an absidal circular
plan. Little more
than the foundations
of the baptistry
survive apart from
the entrance to the
east, apse to the
west and the remains
of the seven central
pilasters. More
recently the area
was used as part of
the cathedral
cemetery. |
