Sportful Long
Distance Cycle Race |
| |
|
On the third Sunday
in June, since 1995,
Feltre has hosted
one of the most
important events
in the amateur
cycling
calendar. Every
year about 4,000
cyclists arrive
from all over
the world to
pedal 216 km up
and down the
Dolomites. |

The Sportful Race was
born out of the
Campagnolo Long
Distance Cycle Race
which took its name
from the Vicenza
company founded by
the cyclist
Tullio Campagnolo,
the inventor of
quick release wheels
and the quick gear
change. The final
climb is to the
Croce d’Aune pass
where, during a race
on 4 November 1924,
Campagnolo had the
experience that was
to change his life
and revolutionize
the word of cycling. |

 |
He got a puncture and couldn’t get the wheel off because of the snow and the cold. Once he got home, he developed his idea for the quick release wheel. The memorial to Tullio Campagnolo at the Croce d’Aune pass was unveiled in 1995 in the presence of some of the great names of cycling of the past, Saronni, Motta, Battaglin, Moser, and Martini, and this moment marked the inauguration of the event which has become so popular with cyclists from all over the world.

In 2009 the event took the name of the Sportful “Only for Real Cyclists” Race, and is the final event in a week dedicated to cycling including the Castelli 24 Hours (on the Friday and Saturday of the previous week) and the Mini Sportful Long Distance Race for children. |
