The beginnings of
Possagno date back
to the ancient
times. Traces dating
back to the
Quaternary have been
discovered together
with interesting
paleontologic finds
nearby Steggio ( a
Museum exhibiting,
above all to the
students, Steggio
excavations has been
inaugurated in 2001
in the Social
centre). |

|
Other finds report
of passings through
the whole Valcavasia,
of neo-eneolotic as
well as
paleovenetian
people. The presence
in Possagno of a
castrum romanum and
a medieval castelar,
as well, is likely
to be thruthful. The
first statements of
the name Possagno
date back to 1076
AC, where the
Rover’s, a family of
germanic origin,
ruled over our
country. In 1388,
after the short
period under the
tyrant Ezzellino’s
rule, Possagno and
all the area around
Asolo, were ruled by
the Serenissima
Republic of Venice
until its fall
occurred in 1797. |
| |
|
Possagno became
well-known all over
the world because
Antonio Canova was
born there in 1757.
In these last two
centuries, either
his sculpture or his
architectural work
have completely
changed the
urbanistic aspect as
well as the road
axis of the town:
the Temple, the
Plaster Casts
Gallery and Canova’s
home have moved
eastwards Possagno’s
barycentre and have
made it one of the
most beautiful and
main resorts of the
Veneto region. |

Possagno is part of
the Pedemontana del
Grappa: the tourists
who reaches this
land can discover
either the beauties
of nature or
beautiful works of
art. |

The Grappa Massif
offers many trips
which, starting from
the valley, reach
the mountain top;
some of the most
interesting are the
following: the path
of Colle San Giorgio
and of the Bastia
(starting from the
Temple in Possagno,
it is possible to
reach Caldoje and
Caniezza; from here
you can climb
northwards along the
ancient via Cogolà
following
instructions towards
San Giorgio. This
trip takes about one
hour and a half);
the naturalist
Anello del Grappa
(starting from the
Bassano alpine hut
it is possible to go
on path n. 156. This
trip lasts 4 hours);
the “Pietre Rosse
(Red Stones) path
(starting from the
Santuario del Covolo,
in Crespano del
Grappa, it is
possible to go the
blaze n.113
following the
instructions). |

HISTORY |

Know that the Grappa
Massif was the
centre of some of
the most violent
struggles of the
First World War
(1915-18): our
mountains still
preserve the
evidences of the
above mentioned
struggles (trenchs,
galleries,
emplacements). We
strongly advise you
to visit Cima Grappa
(1773 mt) with its
grand Ossario
Monument, the
Gallery of Vittorio
Emanuele and the
Sacellum of the “Madonnina”,
a world-wide symbol
of peace and
brotherhood of
nations; it is worth
while to visit the
Monuments of
Pederobba, along the
Feltrina and that of
Quero, in the
Belluno versant of
the Grappa.
