Cathedral of St. Peter

The Cathedral of St. Peter, outside the city walls, was rebuilt after the destruction of 1510. The 11th century crypt and gothic apse are the only remains of earlier churches. The graffito decoration of the façade representing St. Peter Enthroned and Saints Vittore and Corona dates from the 16th century and is partly covered by the rose window which was reopened in 1894. Inside is the 13th century pink marble throne of Bishop Adalgerio Villalta and the Memorial to the Doctor and Philosopher Matteo Bellati by Tullio Lombardo (1528). The organ is by Gaetano Callido.

Three sculptures in wood, St. Peter, St. Prosdocimo, and the Redeemer are by Francesco Terilli. The paintings of interest include the altarpieces, the Madonna della Misericordia and San Giovanni Battista, by Pietro Marascalchi, the Madonna del Carmine by Francesco Frigimelica, the panel with the Madonna Assunta and San Pietro by Antonio Lazzarini, the Madonna and Child and San Vittore e Santa Corona by Paolo Dal Pozzo, San Bonaventura and San Michele Banishing the Rebel Angels by Agostino Ridolfi and the Supper at Emmaus by Gerolamo Turro. In the Chapel of the Santissimo we find the Annunciation, Nativity and Adoration of the Magi by Giambattista Volpato (1672).

Baptistery

The late 15th century Baptistery, formerly the Church of San Lorenzo and later of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, has a wide 17th century portico to the south with a balustrade. The original entrance is at the east end; a stone doorway with”candelabra” decoration (15th century). Inside the church is a monolithic font from 1399 with a wooden cover surmounted by a sculpture of John the Baptist. At a lower level are the remains of an early Christian apse and a Roman hypocaust.

Oratory of the Annunziata

The Oratory stands to the south of the Cathedral next to the rectory. Its façade has a neoclassical open vestibule designed in 1853 by the Feltre architect Giuseppe Berton. It was built in 1622 by Bishop Gradenigo as an extension of the demolished Church of the Holy Cross.

Inside there is a notable 17th century wooden ceiling with imitation architectural features mixed with natural elements. The Oratorio is used as a visitor center and often hosts exhibitions promoting the local area.

Archaeological Area

Below the square in front of the Cathedral is an archaeological area of more than 900 sq. m., created by the Regional Archaeological Agency. A visit offers an understanding of the history of the town over a long period, from the first pre-Roman settlements of early Veneto culture, to the Roman municipium of Feltria, of which a residential-commercial quarter is visible, to the medieval tow, of which can be seen the remains of a major building with a courtyard and a baptistery built on a circular plan.
