DAY ONE - Welcome...

Meet your Tour Directors after clearing customs at Venice Airport.

  • Board our private transportation and drive to the city of Trento, where we will check in to the hotel.  (Depending on flight times, we may stop along the way.)

  • VaFeltre Tours will host an Aperitivo (cocktail hour) with appetizers in the early evening for the group to get to know one another.

  • The evening is yours, to enjoy dinner with new friends, or to relax after a long trip.

**We are happy to collect you from the train station or cruise ship.  Please send us your travel details so that we can plan your pick up.

DAY TWO - Trento

  • After breakfast, we will meet a Local Guide to take us on a guided tour of Trento.  See the Piazza Duomo, the city tower (Torre Civica), the Neptune fountain, the house "Casa Rella" and its frescoes, and stroll along the Via Belenzani.

  • After free time for lunch, board the motorcoach to visit the Castle Buonconsiglio.  This large, well preserved castle was the seat of the Bishop of Trent from the 13th century onwards to the end of the 18th century.  During your visit, you will see the additions made to the castle over 500 years.  Be sure to spend some time in the armory, where several knights’ armor are on display.  Particularly interesting is the audio guided visit to the Torre Aquile (Eagle Tower).  There are well preserved frescoes that tell the stories of how people in the Trentino area lived centuries ago, covering the lives of the field workers all the way to the rich castle dwellers.

  • This evening, you will make your own dinner!  We will meet with a local chef and make a 3 course meal together, and then enjoy our work over a bottle of wine.  Trento has an interesting mix of cuisine, as it has both Italian and Austrian influences.  The ingredients are locally sourced, and the menu is chef’s choice and seasonal. (Please advise us straight away of allergies!)

DAY THREE - Verona

  •  Board our motorcoach and drive to the romantic city of Verona.  Perhaps most popular because of Shakespeare, Verona is full of charm!  We will meet our Local Guide and enjoy a private guided tour (on foot).  Besides the obligatory visit to Juliet’s Balcony, we will see the Arena di Verona, and marvel at the architectural nuances of the Arche Scaligeri, the Castelvecchio, and the Porta Bosari.  We will visit the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore to see the spectacular Romanesque beauty inside.

  • Our Guide will point out restaurants with authentic kitchens, so that you can find something tasty for lunch.  We will remain in Verona for several hours, for lunch, shopping, to visit an art gallery, or simply to enjoy your gelato people watching in the piazza.

  • On our way back to Trento, we will stop at a Grappa factory for a tour and tasting.  Even if you don’t drink liquor, the process of grappa making is quite interesting in itself.  If you have tried Grappa before, we promise that this family has gone above and beyond traditional Grappa making, to create a multitude of choices beyond the original clear strong Grappa that tends to come to mind.

  • When we return to Trento, your Tour Director will suggest a restaurant suitable for the whole group, or you are free to take an evening stroll or return to your hotel room for the evening.

DAY FOUR - Trento & Bassano ...

  • This morning we will board our motorcoach to visit the MUSE, the Natural History Museum of Trento.  This museum is cleverly planned, and a must-see before our excursion to the mountains.  The museum is laid out by floors, starting at the top and working down, showing the fauna, flora, and geology of each section of an alpine mountain.  This is truly a great addition to the tour, as we will all be able to relate to what we learn at the museum over the course of the following few days!

  • After the museum, we will board our motorcoach for the city of Bassano del Grappa.  See the beautiful Ponte Vecchio, which was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569.  The bridge was rebuilt several times, and was destroyed during WWII.  It was rebuilt by the Alpini, and now is referred to as the Ponte degli Alpini.  At the end of the bridge, under the Taverna degli Alpini, is the Museum of the Alpini.  This small museum hosts a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia relating to the Alpini and how they fought in the region during WWI and WWII.  The harsh conditions they faced and the obstacles they overcame will leave you with a sense of respect and awe.  It’s no wonder that the Alpini are mentioned and honored all over the region!

  • At the other end of the bridge is the famous Poli Grappa Museum and shop.  We will enter to learn more of the traditional origins of Grappa, and it’s importance to the region.  Enjoy a few samples, and purchase some Grappa to take home.
We will return to Trento with dinner along the way

  • (B,D)

DAY FIVE - Bolzano & Ortisei ...

  • This morning we will check out of our hotel and board our motorcoach to drive to Ortisei in Val Gardena.  Along the way we will stop for a visit in Bolzano.  The Austrian influence is very strong here, as you will notice many signs in German and Italian.  No visit to Bolzano is complete without a visit to the Museum of Archaeology to visit Otzi the Iceman.  Discovered in 1991, Otzi was mummified in a glacier for over 5300 years!  While many mysteries still surround Otzi, he has brought a wealth of knowledge to scientists and is an invaluable discovery.

  • Outside of the museum, stroll along the shops and restaurants in the pedestrian historic center.  Bolzano is a great place to take in the sights and sounds and see where the Austrian-Italian cultures converge.

  • After lunch, we will drive to Ortisei, rising ever higher in the Dolomites.  Ortisei is an adorable mountain hamlet, where every corner and view is breathtaking.  When you see the buildings and the idyllic setting, it feels like you have entered a storybook!

  • After checking in to our hotel, your Tour Director can make arrangements for those who want dinner, or check into your hotel room and relax for the night.

DAY SIX - Dolomiti Day...

  • This morning we will stroll the pedestrian street of Ortisei, with time for pictures and coffee. We will take a cable car to the top of the mountain.  While we can’t guarantee the weather, there is a mountain hut at the top that offers food and refreshments.

  • We will enjoy lunch together as a group, then take the cable car back down to the village.

  • Ortisei and Val Gardena are famous for their wood carvings.

  • We will board our motorcoach to visit a large factory outlet.  Even if you’re not in to shopping, it is almost a museum in itself!  There will also be time for souvenir shopping in Ortisei this evening before dinner.

  • Dinner for the group will be at a traditional restaurant in the heart of Ortiesi.

  • Lago di Misurina and Tre Cime

  • This morning we will board our motorcoach and drive to Lake Misurina and the Tre Cime (Three Peaks).  The valley of Misurina is reported to have some of the cleanest air in the entire world.  In fact, there is an institute there that treats children with lung development problems.  We will stop for pictures along the way in the Dolomites.

  • Lunch for the group today will be at our favorite restaurant in the Dolomites.  We will sample a smorgasbord of cheeses, stews, wild game (optional!), polenta, and more.  The family has been running the kitchen for decades, and you will leave feeling like you have family in Misurina.

  • After a heavy lunch, we will climb (OK, drive…the bus will climb!) to the top of the mountain to marvel at the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.  Hopefully the weather will be clear, and you will have a spectacular view from the top!  There is an option to walk along a path around the base of one of the Peaks (about 2 miles there and back, mostly flat).  There is a small chapel along the way, and a rifugio (mountain hut) where we can find refreshments.  If you prefer, there are panoramic windows in the rifugio next to the parking lot.

  • In the afternoon, we will return to Ortisei, where you can enjoy the evening in town, or retire to your room.

DAY EIGHT - Valdobbiadene and Venice

  • This morning, we will check out of our hotel and head towards Venice in the motorcoach.  We will pass through some of the most beautiful places in the Dolomiti National Park, with stops for photos along the way.

  • We will lunch at the home of a winemaking family in Valdobbiadene, Land of Prosecco.  After a home-cooked meal, we will stop at a family vineyard to learn more about what makes Prosecco more special than other sparkling white wines.  (Opportunities to buy Prosecco at both locations.)

  • We will continue to Venice, and check in to our hotel.  You may stay close to the hotel, or wander the streets of Venice with your Tour Director to find an aperitivo together, or take a walk alone to experience Venice for yourself.

DAY NINE - Venice...

  • This morning, we will take a special tour partially by boat, and part walking (very minimal).  The boat allows us to see parts of Venice that most tourists don’t get to see!  We will see neighborhoods where actual Venetians live, away from the noise and crowds of tourists.  Learn more about the people who make this unique city tick, and the nuances of living in a city without streets or cars.

  • The afternoon is free for you to shop and eat, or to visit an art gallery or museum.  Your Tour Director is available to stay with you if you want help with translations.  We are also available to help with dinner bookings, whether you would like to dine alone or with the group.

  • **At VaFeltre Tours, we do not believe in selling optional excursions on tour.  However, in Venice, we do have a friend with a very unique option that would need to be booked in advance.  She has a few small boats, and can teach you how to row like a Gondolier!!  There are cicchetti (Venetian appetizers) and Prosecco to reward you for your hard work. While the lesson is not overly strenuous, it does require a degree of balance, coordination, and effort, and we realize that this is not for everyone, which is why we keep it optional.  The cost is 125 Euro per person and can be paid in cash on the tour.  She runs lessons almost daily, and we can book even just one passenger, if one person is interested and the rest of the group is not.

DAY TEN - Venice & Gondolas

  • This morning your Tour Director will take you to the Doge’s Palace (included).  The Palace served as the home of the Dukes of Venice from the 13th Century until the fall of the Venetian Empire in 1797.  The Palace was used by the government until the 20th Century, when it was eventually opened to the public as a museum.  The self-guided tour takes you through the various government offices and courtrooms, and passes through the bridge used by prisoners between the prison and the courtrooms (The Bridge of Sighs).

  • After a wander around St. Mark’s Square and free time for lunch, we will join a Local Guide for a walking tour through another section of Venice.  This tour is followed by a gondola ride (weather permitting!)

  • Tonight is our last night together, so we will have dinner at an intimate restaurant run by native Venetian chefs.  The menu is typically chef’s choice, but there are several options. (Please notify us straight away of food allergies.)  As it is our final dinner, we will include several carafes of wine, or a beer or cocktail or two, for everyone.  We will return to the hotel so you have time to pack for the journey home.

DAY ELEVEN - Venice & Gondolas

  • Depending on flight times, you may have time to explore Venice just a bit more.

  • We will check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport, either by boat or by bus, depending on the hotel location (cost included).

  • If you will be continuing by train or cruise ship, please notify us in advance so that we can plan your transportation.

  • Your Tour Director will enter the airport with you to assist you with check-in, and remain with you until you enter the security line.

  • After hugs and smiles, we will all head back home, filled with wonderful memories.
